Huskie
How have the grouse numbers looked up in the Squaw Lake, Dora Lake to Northome areas? We will be heading up for this weekend and hope to locate some birds while we scout out our deer land. Hearing some good reports about flushes and wonder also if the colors will be at peak or post peak? Thanks,
bama
I was just up to the Kelliher area this past weekend and would have to say that it's still a little difficult right now. That could just be the areas that I was hunting but there was still plenty of ground coverage for the birds. I hunted probably 8 hours between the two days and saw 4 birds getting two of them. That was even with the assistance of a dog. The colors in the trees were nice and they should probably be around peak by next weekend but like I said the ground cover was still thick and really green. haro6996
I was up there this last weekend hunting around the lost fourty. flushed 15-20 birds in 6 hours of hunting but with all the cover getting a decent shot was tough. there are defenitly more birds than last year and once the leaves drop it should get easier. Huskie
That sounds good, we will not be far from there, a little west and south. It would be great to see the numbers on the upswing again, thanks for the reports.
woodman
Huskie- Just talked to my father in Northome and he is seeing an average of 4 birds a night after work. He and mom drive down the old rail road grade looking for deer and manage to see grouse at the same time. He said that they are getting jumpy because of all the traffic. Let the people road hunt, it saves the birds for us who like to walk and enjoy the wilderness on our feet! Good luck when you are up here, and drop me a line and maybe I can give you some pointers on fish and birds. woodman at paulbunyan do net

Huskie
Woodman: We fished Winnie, did ok, other boats by us did better. We did get back to Wagner, saw some deer sign, not a great deal, but we have decided to hunt it again this year anyway. Also picked up a few grouse while walking the area as well. Great two days, brought home a couple of meals, can't complain about that one bit. Might go back up over the Mea break. Good luck next week end and let me know what you see, thanks. Looks like we will be leaving on Friday evening after the fall festival at the Elementary School. That way I can get up early and hit the woods! woodman
Managed to get 4 out of 6 last weekend just south of Northome. Talked to some guys up there and the numbers look awsome this year. It is nice to actually see a grouse again. The dogs did excellent and the kids also enjoyed the walks. Found many TICKS on the dogs which shocked me!
