fall fertilizer, what to use???

The frost this fall will kill your crabgrass.Next spring when the crabgrass seeds germinate you can kill them with a pre-emergent weed killer that you can apply when you do your spring fertilizer. You might have to due two applications to get rid of all the plants.

The first application you can apply in late April or early May.The second if needed can be applied 4-6 weeks later.I almost always apply mine about the time the Lilacs are blooming which is early May and it works well.

Other things you can do is raise your mower deck height to 2.5-3 inches which will provide more shade to the soil surface which will make it harder for the weeds to grow.Along with that is to get your lawn as thick as possible to reduce weed growth. It will choke the weeds out as there is no room for them.

Harvey hit everything right on the money.

For fall you are focusing on killing any difficult weeds such as creeping charlie, violets and clovers. You would treat those after the first frost but when the temp gets above 45*.

For fertilizer you want something with a highly 3rd number like a 25-0-25 or similar for "fall winterizing". This is good for root development and leaves some nitrogen in the soil for a quick spring green up.

Doing anything for crabgrass right now is worthless. My crabgrass is already starting to turn red for the fall and will die with the frost. Pick up a crabgrass pre-emergent for spring and apply it in late april or early may.
