Greg Brown

Yea, I was suprised that there weren't any takers. I ended up taking my 5yr old daughter (last minute decision) and left the wife home with a sick 3yr old.

The show was good as useual. Bo Ramsey opened for and played back up to Greg which was a treat. The kid was having a great time but only lasted about six songs into Greg's set. About half wat through "Kokomo" she was snoring so loud that it was shaking my seat... needless to say, we made our exit then and there.

My wife and I try to see him play whenever he is in the state and he gets better every time.

DF:

Thanks for the generous offer, even though it was missed. Glad to hear you ended up making it, and that it was a good show.

The first time I saw Greg Brown was under the tent at Big Top Chataqua on an Oct. night in '97. By far the best show I've been to. He wrote a song on the way up through WI called "GG," for the infamous forest hiway that runs through the Chequamegon. The whole time we were thinking it was some girl "Gigi," as he intended it.

From there, it's always been good, but he's seemed to wane a bit over the years. I think the crowd (I know I do) hopes for some of his storytelling type songs, ya know, something special and above and beyond what you'd hear at a "normal" show. I suppose though, playing that many shows it gets old.

I try to see him once a year. Saw him last Feb. in Viroqua, WI. His daughter Pieta Brown opened for him, and she was great. Almost outshined her old man.

We first saw him play at Pequot Lakes High School of all places; probably no more than 500 people in the room. He took a wrong turn driving up from Mpls and ended up being about an hour late. When he finally got there, he walked into the room, still wearing his jacket, guitar still cased, sat down, took out his guitar and just started playing; I thought that was pretty cool... but I know what you mena about wanting to hear more storytelling; thats when he sets himself apart from alot of songwriters.

We also saw him earlier this year in Grand Rapids where he was playing with Pieta and again, Bo Ramsey; you're right, she's good.

Yeah, you know when you're getting the real him, when he basically just starts talking and telling stories while he's playing the guitar. It's rare to find someone that can improvise lyrics as well as he does, and maybe that's why he keeps it close to his vest. I heard him say something to the effect that as an artist you have to be careful what you give of yourself.

"Let all men know thee, but no man know thee thoroughly; men freely ford that see the shallows," Ben Franklin.
