Canada help please.

I am going to Saskatchewan the first week of october. I have never hunted in canada and any info would be greatly appreciated.Do I buy my license here in minnesota before I go or do I just get everything up there, What else should I know about crossing the border? I am bringing my dog and someone told I can't bring dog food up there, is this correct? Any info would help. thanks for any and all responses.

Unless you can buy the license online, you will most likely have to purchase it once you get up there. If you bring your dog, make sure you have all the proper paperwork on him (shots, etc.) from the vet. Not sure about the dog food?

You will need to clear you firearm in at Canadian customs. They take down all the info (serial #, caliber, model, action) before you go inside. You will fill out some paperwork and they will run your background through Immigration. There is a fee and plan on being there at least 30-40 min. if everything goes smoothly. Stick to the "yes sirs" and "no ma'ams" and you should be fine.

Depending on where you are staying you can buy the license at the hotel. At least you can where I stay. I would also grab some of the gun paperwork you need to fill out at the crossing. It makes it a lot quicker if you have it filled out the next time you head up. Oh, bring lots of shells. It is great!

I am going to Manitoba the 10th and I have already got my license. I will try and get the web site for you. Maybe do a seach under Canadian fish and game. You can also get the gun paperwork to fill out from them. You need that paperwork in triplicate so fill it out at home and make copies. The gun fee is $50 per gun if I remember correctly. I am not sure about dog food, but you definately need shot records, especially rabies. You won't need a passport, but a drivers license/ID card and your birth certificate. I'll see if I can get that web site for you.

They lowered the gun registry to $25.00 last year. At the same time they shortened the time it was good for. When you paid $50.00 it was good for one year. Now the $25.00 is good for 90 days I believe.

Here is a HSOforum to get your licence info from. www.se.gov.sk.ca/fishwild/licence . I would order your licence before you go. Trying to find a open vendor in the middle of Saskatchewan can be almost impossible at times. You will need to find a place to buy your stamp however. Saskatchewan does not sell stamps via mail. Manitoba does however.

Good luck and like said before bring lots of shells. Oh ya, any amount over 200 shells you will have to pay duty on them. Know exactly how many shells you have on you before getting to the border and what the value is of them.
