Gordie
My hunting partner and I are thinking of duck opener out at Lake Traverse. I have heard that the hunting is great out there and I have never been hunting out thier and I'am in need of any info that I can gather. I have a 26ft motorhome and acouple of jon bots that we will be bringing. does anyone know what the water conditions are like? Is there places that are off limits to hunting? Thanks inadvance... whitewolf6647
If you're bringing a motor home out you can say at the silver bridge there is a parkig area that alot of guys stay at. When you go through town here, Wheaton, you head west on highway 27 about 6 miles and you'll see a bridge on your right and a sign that says Rosholt SD. Just turn right there and you'll see the parking area. Otherwise you can camp at the county park which is also on Highway 27 only that is about I would say 20 miles out. As far a the hunting goes you can go anywhere on the north end of Traverse up to the State line bridge and it is all public land but if you don't get out there early on opener and by early I mean about 2 am , I see guys going out on opener while I'm working from about 2 am. until I get off work, you're going to have a hard time finding a good spot. The north end is very shallow maybe 5 feet Max. quite a ways out from the rushes. My suggestion would be to come out before season like right now and look around. I do a ton of waterfowl hunting but I have never hunted on Traverse lake itself before because of the pressure for one and I have lines on numerous private holes, and also place on Bigstone Lake so there's no need for me to hunt the main Traverse lake. I've never hunted it either but you can look at Mud lake just on the north side of the road from Traverse. I know that also gets pounded pretty good the first couple weeks but guys did really well out there all year last year. anything else you need to know about the area just let me know and I'll try to help you out the best I can. Gordie
I've got a friend that lives in Ortonville and was tring to get a hold of him but haven't had a luck yet (he's never home) is Big Stone the same as rules on were you can hunt. I've black powder hunted deer in that area and fished Big Stone a few times and thought that would also be a good duck hunting water. thanks again for the info. whitewolf6647
Yeah as far as I know it's the same regs aside from the north end Big Stone is not public it's private but for divers I know the Hornstein's landing area there is alot of public land that borders the lake and is pretty good during the tail end of season.I'm acctually originally from Ortonville my parents still live there and now that hunting season is going to be starting I get down that way quite a bit. I hunt quite a few areas between Clinton and Ortonville mostly bow and waterfowl, and I have about 1/2 a dozen fishing and hunting buddies that live down there also.
