Minnetonka Muskies

Griggs

Recommended Posts

I was just curious if anyone could give me some help for some muskie action on Minnetonka.

I went out tonight for about 4 hours just looking for some good muskie areas. I know the lake reasonably well, but I normally fish bass, so I'm not really educated on the muskie areas.

I noticed a lot of the shorelines are very shallow with a lot of millfoil, I was pretty much unable to find any cabbage.

Some areas to start with would be good. And I was wondering how far from shore you typically fish? Looks like a good hundred yards plus to get into 8-10ft range. I was pretty much using a shallow invader and some bucktails. I caught a 29" Northern, so I was fairly happy with that.

Any other info would be good. Thanks a bunch!

what lures should I be using through that shallow water with all that milfoil? The only thing I can really think of is a spinner, but I had a trebel as a trailer, which was not cool, I'll have to fix that.

Contacting some of the weeds is not a bad thing. The muskies use the weeds to ambush thier prey and will hit as the bait rips through the weeds. You may want to start with a top prop bait as this is much easier to work over the shorline and topwater jerk baits. As the water cools work your shallow invader parallel to the weed edges and that should put you in contact with a pig or two. grin.gif

Get yourself some single hook spinner baits like CJ Spins or Eagle tails (both at Thornes) Don't be afraid to throw suicks and glide baits right on top of the milfoil either. You will find muskies to be surprising shallow in as little as 3ft of water. After turnover I'd look more to the deep weed edges but this year they have been right in the weeds.

Hit the east side yesterday afternoon, but no luck. Felt and looked like it was November out there. Kind of cool though.

No 'ski sightings, but my buddy lost about a 5lb. bass on a 12" Believer. The fish hit once he started retrieving it. Spit him when it jumped out of the water. Nice fish, was hanging on the side of a deepwater dock.

Mark Stanley - I think you were saying big bass are hitting muskie baits....

Not to change topics, but yesterday was a good day for those bibs. Where does one get those?

I have fished on Tonka 6 times this last week ,My boat has had a muskie on every day and up to 4 some days, 20 to 50 Northerns every day 8 to 10 hours on the lake.A lot of the pike are over 30 inches and the lardgest was 39". I fish medium spinner baits 3/4 to 1 ounce size all the way from shore to the outside weed line. every day is a different color and depth but if you put in the time you will find them.Good luck
