Steve Foss
Canon's 580EX is the way to go. You can get other brands like Metz compatible with Canon, but the Canon flashes allow you to do more. The 580 is a bit under $400, which is a chunk of change for a flash, but it'll do a tremendous number of tasks very well and is quite versatile. If you can find used Canon flashes ranging from the 550EX down to the 380EX, they'll do you really well, too. I have an older 380EX that does fine work for me. Don't do much flash work, or I'd have upgraded to the 550 or 580. Generally, the smaller the number, the less power the flash has and the longer it takes to recycle between flashes, both very important features. Also, the lower the number the older the style. Each new style upgrade has included new, more sophisticated features.
