Timber Wolf Hunting Onterio

Hey Guys, I just purchased a Onterio small games license and a Wolf Seal. Has anyone here hunted wolves before. I have a friend that lives on Lac La Croix and that is where I plan on hunting. We may try baiting and posting and then cruising the lakes via snowmobile. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

dont know what the area is like up there but if its open enough id try calling them in, either with a hurt rabbit or even coyote howls. we have gotten a couple in northeren mn to resond to both of them. of course that was a 2 in the morning in the moonlight.

I would try using those calls, but I don't have any of them. Does anyone on the forum have some to borrow or rent. I live near International Falls. Thanks for the help

calls are fairly cheap for hand calls and thats what id try to carry around up there. 10 20 bucks at cabelas. i did find some at a gas station up that way one time for 3 bucks so id try to get your own and give it some practice.

I don't know if this is legal or not in Canada. I have heard of people dragging a road killed deer out to the middle of a lake, on the ice of course, and sitting back and watching it for a couple of days. Mister Wolf will show up for a free meal.

To bait wolves is legal in Ontario and it's what I do to catch mine in snares but have hunted them over bait too with success but often they prefer to come only into the open under the cover of darkness and it's illegal to shoot here then .

Usually we run them with radio collared hounds and trying to get ahead of the dogs with snowmachines but like anything being run by hounds, wolves have a tendancy to run thick cover and it's getting a decent shot that is the hard part .I've tried calling and I am sure it will work but can't claim any success because I don't have the time in doing it much .

I have always found timbers to be a far travelling critter that moves around in a large territory . Even at a bait pile they only hang around for so long before leaving and your best bait by far is beaver .

The squawking of ravens at a baitpile really draws the foxes and wolves in but it's keeping enough bait at the pile with ravens around that can become a difficulty too . I have a system that works to trap wolves consistently around baitpiles but getting a clean shot is a whole other story .

Hey Trapper, Thanks for the info, We have been getting beavers from a local trapper near La Croix. My partner usually drills an ice hole and lets the beaver freeze half way in the water so something can't just grab and run with it. Trapper do you think the best bet would be baiting or cruising with the sleds looking for them. What is you system that works over bait. Here is my email address if you would rather email me.
