Foam Walkers

Wiskers

What are your thoughts on Running the Today's Tackle Foam Walkers with Floating lindys vs just spinner rigs.

I use the Foam Walkers all the time with all sorts of rigs behind them but I seem to like the spinner rigs with floaters on them.

I seem to get less snags with the spinners up off the bottom just that much more.

What are your thougts.

I also run foam walkers and spinners and like the set up. The foam walkers do work well with just a Lindy Rig or a plain old floating jig head. Only draw back, and its fairly minor, is I dont feel bottom quite as well as I do with a lead weight. I counter this by using Power Pro.

One secret with this rig is I will at times mount a small spinner or spin n glow right onto the top of the foam walker. I think the added sound and vibration calls fish in. I also do this on bottom bouncers at times.

I too have had that bottom feel missing but what I do is go to bigger wieght than I would otherwise use. I use braid a lot and I have found that it has much more drag and that is what keeps me from getting to the bottom like I should. Either I let out more line or go heavier.

Im with you wiskers I believe its the foam resistance/drag. As you do I usually go a bit haevier with a foam walker than I would another solid lead weight.

I really like the foam walker in current to toss out the back of the boat when anchored. With just a little tip movement it will move up and down with the weight still on bottom and I feel this helps me get better movement on my baits and triggers strikes. If Im getting snaged a lot Ill take 2# test and just tie the weight on with that and then I will usually only lose the weight.

If you normally use a 1/2oz weight on a lind rig set up you will need to buy a 3/4oz Foam Walker. The Foam is bouyant so in reality it will subtract a little of the weight. So in other words go with the next size (weight up) Foam Walker than you think. I normally use fireline with a floro leader to a plain Gamagatzu hook with a small piece of Ice Buster Bobber for bouyancy to keep the bait up of the bottom. Works great! Bruce Mosher

i have used the foam walkers, but it seems, just like other feedbacks, that the lead slip sinker works better with the Phelps Floaters. You can feel what you need to feel better that way. I think that the foam walker may work better with a spinner than a slip sinker does though. Spinner fishing is not as much of a finesse thing as Floater or Rig fishing, when a fish hits a spinner you know it, versus feeding a fish with a rig.

When I use the Foam Walkers, I can feel the hard bottom, Rocks, and soft Bottom. The best thing when you are more finesse fishing you can actually stop with the Foam Walker and it doesn't tip over. Then if you have a phelps floater (behind the Foam Walker) the bait struggles against the foam and entices the strike. Both your line and the bait are off the bottom and in the strike zone. The other point that even some PWT Pros have stated is that the Foam Walker is standing about 7" off the bottom and when a Walleye hits the Foam Walker actually will tip over toward the bite and will give the Walleye a split second more time to gulp the bait. A lead sinker doesn't go any where. It is an instant pull for the fish to feel. Plus a lead sinker will snag up before a Foam Walker will. The Foam Walker actually wobbles side to side when it's off the bottom being dragged. A little more action is always good. I have even had Walleyes come to the net with just a Foam Walker in their mouth and not the Leech which is 3' behind the Foam Walker. That of course was in Canada where the fish are a little more aggressive. Just my 2 cents worth. Bruce Mosher
