delta hunter
Just wondering what kinda spreads everyone is going with, or notice how most of the geese in the state are setting up in fields?
Sartell Angler
couple dozen bigfoots in family groups is what we're going with for early season...usually mix in a few silos as well for good measure. we're getting pounded with rain tonight with the forecast calling for more tomorrow so I'm gonna sleep in tomorrow and hit 'em hard on monday a.m.
Fish&Fowl
Geese in the grain fields on our side and the Canadian side as well. Small family groups seem to be the way to go. Setting them more in a line next to eachother more than in front of and behind eachother seems to be working well. That's how I've seen the majority of them sitting. Bluebird days up here with NO wind have made hunting rather tough. We need some nasty weather to keep 'em moving and keep us from baking while sitting in the coffins! certified jumbo
I like to do a horseshoe shaped spread, 2 doz. decoys. We usually sit in the middle of the horseshoe.Much more importantly than the spread is the field you are hunting. Find a field that geese frequent everyday and you will have action. tearin' lips
Grain. All the geese we saw sat in family groups of up to 10. We ran three to four groups of honkers with 5-10 per group for a total of no more than three and a half dozen. The less decoys worked better. We ran greenhead gear elites( fully flocked with motion stakes) and Final Approach Eliminators with motion stakes. Realistic and minimal calling was the key to outhunting other groups in out area. SSSTaxidermy
Grain fields was all I had to work with as well...I used 2 dozen deks...1 doz of Final Approaches and 1 doz of my old shells...First time with my new FA's. WOW do the hockers like those...The past 3 days, no matter were I put them, they wanted to land right in them...Nice deks make the difference, I wish they weren't so spendy. But I used the small U pattern. Used the flag to get the attention, made minimal honks, and let them do the rest. They liked to sit in the green harvested field strips and it worked out to were that line I was set up in was somewhat in a U shape. All around good weekend, considering the conditions...No Jewelry...But the old saying, a bad day of hunting (or fishing) is ALWAYS better than a good day at work. walleyewacker
Most of the birds I was scouting came out of the family groups and bunched up a bit late last week. Over the weekend I started putting 6-10 thinned out decoys in front of the blinds and bunching up around the blinds with more to the sides and more out the back. As I scouted over the weekend I noticed the birds wanted to land amongst birds but not in the heart of the flock. Putting decoys in front put them on the ground 10-15yds in front of the blinds rather than them wanting to land behind us without. I want to say we averaged 4 dozen decoys since opener depending, full bodies. We hunted everything from pouring rain friday and saturday, fog sunday, and blue skies monday so I dont think this was weather dependend.
