Trout Personal Best(s) Beaten again! 8/29 - (pics)

Just call me Troutin Ty. I’m starting to get a feeling for this troutin craze. It’s very real and becoming noticeably ever present in my weekly schedule. This is my very first year trout fishing and it’s certainly been a change in my lifestyle.

I had the opportunity to take a buddy out fishing today that loves to trout fish, but doesn’t get out as much as he’d like to. – Nick.

We opted for an easy access stream that’s relatively close to Rochester, but far enough to keep some traffic away.

Hoppertunity (nice one Ike) presented itself about 10 casts into the day with a Rebel Hopper lime/yellow as I iced a 13.5” brownie. Soon after that Nick shattered his personal best with a 12” bow that hit his Panther Martin – rainbow trout flavored.

It wasn’t long after that when Nick boated a 10” brown, which is his second personal best of the day. Laughter and good times were flowing.

ENTER: Another personal best for me… Mustard Mud #7 Rapala Countdown took a gorgeous 15” bow. This is my largest stream rainbow to date.

1 dink smallie and 1 sucker fell victim today as well, as well as several other bows and browns.

I can’t stress enough how important it is to release these larger fish. I’ve put in some really fairly demanding hours on the trout waters and I know a few of my buddies have as well and we’re still chasing the elusive 17+”er.

All fish were CPR’d today (Caught, Photographed, and Released). I actually forgot my camera at home, so I took these photos with my phone.

Nice fish and great to see it still is putting out trout. In the late 80's is was great for big browns.I see the dnr has done some reconstruction on the segment in town and obviously it's paying off.I have to say that after 25 years of serious trout fishing that after seeing your bass pics that I want to run to the tackle store and load up with plastics. That artificial fishing is a art however and have'nt had to much luck on my own.Anyway I know what you mean trout fishing is highly addictive. You should be able to increase your personal best with ease still with enough time spent.Especially if you fish in places like Logan creek which is now under certain regulations and places like Rush creek.Keep in mind that big browns, say ones over 17" are very territorial. They rule there area.Once you find one which can be a journey. You can fish for him day to day. This is in a stream I mean and not a river.Rivers are a different story.Remember that areas below feeder creeks provide good oxygen levels and a fresh supply of food.

nice fish tyler and what a super time of year to get out. The trout are almost stupid when it comes to those big protein bars we call grasshoppers. Also Quickstrike (kent) is right. i have e-mailed him several times and flirted with trips up there and there is chance for all of us to break records if we go up there with him. Maybe we need a little F.M. get together in duluth. ike

Nice fish. I took my niece, 6yrs old, trout fishing this week. I hooked her up with a small mepps on her Dora The Explorer rod and she proceeded to catch fish after fish. I had packed some Berkley trout nibbles in case the fishing was slow, but turns out nearly every cast yielded at least a follow. She did have some issues with fish becomming wrapped in the line, like your fist photo. I suggested she stick her rod tip in the water and keep tension on the fish after the initial strike, to help alleviate this. Her largest was a 19' brown.

She is now ready for the fly rod, as she became bored with the ease of catching fish on the spin - great kid. With only a month left in the season I am confident she will take a fish on the fly yet this year.

Nice! Its always good to get a personal best! Here is one of my personal best 23.5in matt1splakeui5.jpg Looking back, I kinda wish I would have gotten it mounted. Unfortunatly its my only best trout that I have a good pic of. My personal best Rainbow [steelhead] is from the Brule [Quickstrike is on the money], not measured but probably in the 25-26in range. Best Brown was from the White River AR, about 24", there are BIG trouts down there! Biggest brookie-Cloquet river, really.

Nothing like getting a personal best and beating it the same day wink.gif

Ty, welcome to the world of trout fishing!

For me the addiction of trout fishing is the exploration of the streams. I'll find myself walking miles of water looking for that next pool. I've fished the Whitewater system for over 20 years and there's very few stretches that I hav'nt fished, so now I have my favorite stretches(milkruns), but every year, I will always try a new stretch till I've done it all -- all 3 branches, not to mention the dozen or so other streams within a short drive.

And there are BIG fish there, 25"+, but they have plenty of cover to sit in and wait for there meals to come to them. I did, however get my previous personal best right under the highway bridge in the State park -- 20" (cover is long since gone).

That being said, QS is right. In one day, we moved and caught and saw so many big fish (residents and non) that I can't help but go back and start connecting the dots of that great river. My current best came from there - a 28" brown(non-res, I presume) middle of the day, down from Hwy 2.

QuikeStrike, when I get up there again, maybe you can put me on another stretch to help me connect those dots wink.gif.

Ty keep it up, and always keep exploring. If you don't have it already, get the Minnesota Gazeteer map book and the DNR SE Minnesota trout map and have at it.
