apples and deer help please........

i have this huge question....im hunting on this land with apple trees and ponds and my problem is that should i trust more of the little crab apples or stick with the regular apples. the thing is though, theres about 10 apple trees and then about 500 yds away theres this lone crab apple tree and its right by the pond. theres tons of big trails running by both of them but im not sure if the deer just like those crab apples or not? any help would be great. thanks!

WE have both where we hunt in N.D.along with chike cherrys.I have noticed that the deer will eat all of the above.I do believe that they eat each varity when the fruit is at its best.I do know that they seem to be crazy for those crab apple trees.We have some about 50 yards from the house and there is always deer there and even standing on thier hinds legs trying to get evry single one.From what I have seen I would venture to guess that I would hunt the crab apple before the regular apple trees.

At my place the deer are jumping the fence to come into the yard at night. They are going for the riper fruit first. They have more to choose from all in the same area so I would go with the riper ones first. Or put stands by both and move if needed or as the season progresses.

One thing to look for is this. Check both trees for visible fruit. Sometimes they will not produce every year. I know it seems dumb to mention. Also just because there are trails does not mean the deer prefer it for the apples. Maybe it is the water access, more so. At my place you can see the droppings when they are around. If apples start to drop hunt that area first.

hey! thanks for the info guys. i honestly dont know what to do yet but once it gets to the first day of hunting i will know. maybe i should just sit out at different areas for alittle bit and see what comes along the way. thanks again and good luck hunting this yr!

Sounds like you have two good areas to hunt, so set up stands at both. Consider what wind direction and how you will access your stand at both sites. Maybe each spot will work better with different wind directions, so you're have a good option no matter what the wind is.
