I was wondering how may of you guys hunt from a ground blind for bear? I was thinking of trying it this year on some remote spots.

I have done it before. I was in my tent and only had the front window open facing the bait. Very different feeling when you cannot see around you and only in front. I was worried about scent but was using a rifle so I was a little farther away than my first stand.

I guess I would play the wind a little more and know that it is Oh so fun when you get bees in the tent with you and have no way of escaping!

Good luck. I did take my tent down every day though as I wanted to make sure it was there when I got back and the bear did not trash it.

I have hunted bear from the ground. It is very common in Manitoba. I had one bear walk into the blind, within about 22 inches of me, it sniffed the gun barrel that was pointing at it and turned and walked away. I've had plenty within 10 feet. It is the highest of highs. It is the most exciting, nerve racking way to hunt. The binds are set about 70 to 120 yards away from the bait.

My best friend had a sow get scared off the bait by a big boar, she ran right down the shooting lane toward his blind. He was sitting on a log with his day pack on the ground with in arms reach. The sow ran down the shooting lane and as she past him she kick the day pack and the either the draft or long fur brushed his pant leg. God I love bear hunting.

I have a friend that hunted last year up by Winnie. He stuck a bear right at dusk with his bow at 30 yds and the bear ran right down the trail he walked in on. About a mile or so off the main road in. Hunting by himself he said he spent the night in the woods because he never heard the grunt of death. Huge camp fire and scared of every snap and crackel in the woods. Needless to say I think I would have done the same. Bear ended up about 200 yds down the trail curled up.

I once saw an outfitter's site that had an FAQ on bear hunting. One of the question's was "Do I have to hunt from one of your stands or can I hunt from the ground while bowhunting?" The outfitter's response was simply "Are you crazy?"

I don't think I'd take it to that extreme but I did think it was funny.
