tjwierz2
Has anyone ever eaten a smallmouth? I would never keep one this early in the season due to spawning. I've never heard much about them being good to eat and I was wondering if anyone would share their own opinion. Thanks

we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators Rick Posted May 24, 2000 we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators Share Posted May 24, 2000 lol, spoken like a true smallmouth angler. I agree wholeheartedly.
tjwierz2
I agree totally...I was just mildly curious! :-) Ive never had a 45 inch muskie on the line...but smallies are my favorite fish to catch too. My only pet peeve with fishing is the people who keep large pike and muskie. Have a replica made, or catch something smaller to eat.
Toad
Where harvested wisely, there's not a thing in the world wrong with dispatching a few smallmouths for a meal. 'Wisely' in this case might mean a limit of sub 14" bass on a shield lake. Or a couple 1 1/2-pound smallmouth from a small river. OK to squash a bug or wear leather, but the horror of a hunter taking a deer . . . Just as we sometimes say, walleyes were made to eat, but bass, well, they were never meant to be harvested. Perhaps, it may be time to examine the message we're sending. To belittle another angler for taking a limit of big fish may be one thing. But it's something else entirely to pass along a no-tolerance notion of anti-harvest in the case of abundant (and "glamorous") sportfish like smallmouth bass, Atlantic salmon or brook trout. we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators Rick Posted May 28, 2000 we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators Share Posted May 28, 2000 : )Sorry Gang, but smallmouth are not that great to eat unless you doctor them up nicely. Personally, I'd rather eat a can of tuna, but that could open up a whole differant can of worms, ehh gang? Give me a nice walleye, perch, panfish or catfish meal anyday.in other words this is a Sharing Recipes Forum, which means we do eat fish. The selective harvest, catch and release, or keep em all debate should go to the Statewide Concerns forum, don't you think?Let's keep this for sharing recipes. Guess I should've said that earlier.Toad, maybe you could put a wise use piece together to start it off there, what do you think?
