VHF in Canada

Hans

Question

I will be going to Lac Seul Canada for the first time in a couple weeks and was wondering if I can use my VHF radio there without any special permit/license on a 17' fishing boat, and if so where could I find information on the channel usage rules there. Also where would be a good place to look up border crossing info such as what bait/alcohol I can bring into Canada. Any other info/tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think you are good to go on your small craft radio usage, but if someone knows for sure, chime in. Hans, go to the Canada link to the Fishing Minnesota page. The first two categories that have a tack icon will answer all questions. If not, one case of beer per man and no leeches or minnows allowed. Crawlers packed in paper only. Read the Canada page though. Tons of info on there. Going myself in Sept to Lac Seul. Going to be great!! Just bought the Canada Navionics chip today. Lac Seul will be (somewhat) easier to navigate. This will be my second trip there. It doesnt get any better than Lac Seul. Trust me.

In September of 03, when I was there last, we caught them on jig and minnows. I didnt try anything else because we didnt need to. The best thing that I learned, was to find an active spot and anchor. Tried to drift/jig before that without much luck. After I started anchoring, we started hauling them in. Crawlers should work fine and you should be able to access them up there, but if you want to bring them, they need to be packed in paper, and that is the only live bait you can bring across. Since your going up in a couple of weeks, I would start shallow and work your way deep. If you see what looks like schools of walleyes on your finder, then that is probably what it is. Fish it. Where are you staying at? Let me know how the accomodations are. We stayed at Goosebay Camp in 03 and it was great. This time we are going to try Golden Fawn. We plan on going back there in the Summer of 07. Careful of the hazards and pay close attention to your map. If you have a GPS, stay on the routes known to you as being safe and if you digress off of them, go slow. Let me know how you did.
