Eagle Lake

Recommended Posts

I am heading to Eagle Lake Ontario in a couple weeks to chase big muskies and was wondering if anybody has been there recently and or would be willing to cough up a little information. I am just looking for some general information that might point me in the right direction as I realize this is a huge lake. I did purchase a map, so I at least have a starting point. Thanks a lot for any help.

I've been up there around mid-late August and what worked for us was bucktails in the cabbage. Running 'em fast and covering ground, like you said, there's a lot of water to explore. Let me know how it goes, we're heading up there in about a month.

I have fished it twice both mid-summer and cabbage/rock points, wind exposed seemed to be the pattern both times. Don't everlook shallow weedy bays if there are any in your area, especially if there are any rocks, they can hold fish as well.

Fished the Osbourne Bay area last year and the little action we had was on large bucktails during the day and topwaters in the evening. We found fish both on rocks and weeds and that was the beginning of August. Oh yeah, hope the 'little action' comment doesn't discourage you - we had real hot, bright weather for the 3 days we were there and thus tough fishing, but its a neat body of water with some pigs.

Well I am back from Eagle Lake, and what a great lake it is. I stayed at Vermilion Bay Lodge and would recomend it to anybody planning a trip to the area. The owner, Gordon Bastable, is both very friendly and knowledgeable when it comes to fishing this lake.

We spent most of our time targeting muskies and we raised some real monsters. A couple of them were pushing the 50 inch mark, with most of them in the 42 to 48 inch range. We were only able to close the deal with a couple of them, but it is still fun to see those big girls.

The walleye fishing on Eagle was great. Catching around 10 walleyes an hour was pretty typical for those who could tear themselves away from muskie fishing. We also caught a lot of pike while targeting muskies, with the biggest coming in at around 15 pounds.

I heard that you can't fish Eagle after dark. Anyone know the reasoning for this ?

I stayed at AML on Eagle a few years ago. Herbie told us it was due to the vulnerability of the trophy Walleyes after dark. Apparently, the big eyes were very vulnerable while feeding on whitefish after dark. HUGE numbers of trophy walleyes were harvested so the MNR decided to end the night fishing.
