Mercury voltage regulator issues

Vtiller1900

Question

I have a 99 100hp Merc that just went through its second voltage regulator. The first time caused a fire with about $2000 in damages (insurance covered). Just recently, about 2 years after the first incident, it happened again but I gave it a fire extinguisher treatment before it could burn up anything but the wire harness and regulator.

Merc dealer said it was a bad connection to the battery. I have paid special attention to this and really didnt think it was bad. Any idea why this happens? Any one else with the same issues?

THe same thing happen to my 50 4- stroke, they said it was a bad battery connection, cost me $900 for a wire harness and regulator. This winter I got a notice in the mail from mercury about the same thing, I think I need to find that just in case.
