1978 9.9 merc question

Question

Hello,

I ended up with a 1978 9.9 merc, At lease that is what I think it is it has a 110 logo on the outside.

My question is a water pumping issue.

This belonged to a relitive of mine, he told me that it will pickup and pump water when running faster but not at low speeds. He had this repaired a few years ago for the same problem. The person that did the repair told him that there was a gasget that he replaced to fix this problem.

I have taken this apart and replaced the impeller thinking that this was the problem I have not put the lower unit back on yet in case someone here might have a idea, I did not see any gasgets getting to the impeller.

Is there a gasget that may be gone?

The only other problem that I see that could be causing this is a plastic tube that joins the water tubes when bolted back together. It looks homemade and in not very good shape hopefullly this makes some sence

any ideas?

Thanks

Rick

Rick,

there are some gaskets in the water pump housing.

When you remove the impeller there are 2 plates (stainless steel) below it, and there are 2 gaskets underneath them.

Also the pickup (plastic) tube is not the greatest looking item but it is definitely not homemeade.

I would suggest getting a water pump kit, I believe it cost around $ 40.00 and a plastic tube for the pickup.

You DO WANT to spray water even when it's idling or you might have serious consequences later.

PS: your motor is actually a 11hp measured at flywheel but with todays rating at propeller it is actually a 7.5hp/8hp

Ok Val thanks alot

I didn't go pass the impeller when replacing so that is probally where they are.

Your spelling of gaskets looks alot better than mine did (I knew the spelling didn't look right) blush.gif

That tube does't look very good I will have to see how it compairs to the new one.
