Island Lake - Pine County?

Recommended Posts

Ray,

I only fish the lake 3-4 times a year. Suicks and glide baits have been the most consistent producers for me but have also caught a few on topwater. Like most lakes wind and weeds are the ticket. Not a ton of fish but decent size average. Above average pike and bass can be had also.

The locals dont care for muskies and I heard that during the winter they try to catch and kill all they can. The last few times I have fished it it has been pretty tough. It used to be my favorite lake to fish, try the sunken islands they are good spots.

I was there on opener and the guy that lives in the house next to the access was giving me an earful of how muskies eat all the walleyes and that if I catch any to be sure and take them home. To bad.

Hugo,

How did you do on opener? Was there alot of other muskie fisherman out there? I was up on Alex. Caught one 36" and had a handful of good follows. That lake gets hit pretty hard on opener. But not as hard as the metro.

Thanks,

Ray

Ray, I just started looking at this forum and saw your question. My son and I fish Island fairly regularly, as my folks have a cabin across the freeway on Sand. Island can be good - we fished it once so far this year and had a few follows is all. Will try it again this wekend. Someone caught a 53" last year - and kept it! It was kind of lean and only weighed 33#. You should also try for Pike on Sturgeon if you're interested. DNR is managing for them and they are doing well - they test netted a 50" this spring, and people have caught a couple over 40 so far.
