Lead Alternatives

metrojoe

Question

I exchanged some of my lead in for lead alternatives at Waterfest this past spring and have been using it since. The bullet type sinkers and bell sinkers work really well. The tin split shot on the other hand has been a real pain. It’s so hard the little ears bend when you take it off your line so you’ll be able to use it one more time for sure. Now I’ve got a handful of tin split shot rolling around the bottom of my tackle box I need to throw out. There has to be a better solution. I don’t think I lost near that much lead last summer.

I did get some steel samples but I haven’t used it yet. Anybody have any experience with other lead alternatives?.

There's a putty like tungsten based thing that I saw at the Outdoors show this past spring. You just take what you need, form it on the line, and cast away.

I haven't used any bullet weights yet but am considering getting some as I experiment with texas rigging in the next couple of weeks.

The Safe Jigs by Catch-N Tackle are made of Bismuth, and are slightly lighter than lead. These jigs have an added eye on both sides that is "buldged" out and adds that extra weight to fit the 1/8, 1/4...ounce jig sizes. They come in two different colors, Hi Glow Flame and Hi Glow Chartreuse. I like the 1/32 and 1/16 ounce for panfish in the Flame color, I've done well this year with those. The quality of these jigs are top-notch as well, a very good choice for panfish in my opinion. They also come in 1/8, 1/4 and 1/64 ounce as well. Just another alternative for lead jigs...
