Outboard Problems...

gjk1970

Question

Just bought the boat a couple days ago prop looked like it has chopped down trees. But guy claimed motor ran great but after 20 minutes in the water it jumped out of the water and died. Tried restarting it but acted as if battery was dead started just grinded. But ten minutes later acted as if it had a new battery started right up ran for a minute and died and has yet to start again. This is a 94 Evinrude 50 VRO is it worth taking to the shop to get fixed?

I'd say its probably more use to you if it were running. so yes bring it in.

"jumped out of the water and died" Did you hit something?

I wonder if it overheated or run without oil. You might want to ask the previous owner if the VRO was disabled and if he went with premix.

VRO was disconnected and has been using mixed gas, Now only if I knew for sure if the brother of the guy that sold it to me had oil in the tank when I bought it this last week. I added 12 gallons to the on board tank and added the oil needed but I have no clue how much fuel the tank holds and if the previous gas was or had oil added.

No I did not hit anything either, thought the same thing at first, but has a new prop on it since the old one was wrecked and I was worried about it running off balance and wearing out the seals. The prop did not have a scratch in it when I checked it out. I learned today that the person I bought it from did not have the lower unit repaired and he did not just recently drain and fill the unit this last week as he claimed or otherwise I would not have dumped two cups of rusty looking water out of the lower unit today. I learned to NEVER take anyones word on these things after this purchase. Luckily I got the boat for 700 less then what he was asking!

I think the boat must have been stored over winter with the water in the unit and probably ruined the lower unit! mad.gif
