Tire rim sizes

moderation

Question

I’ve got kind of a quick question. I have a tire rim in my pole barn, I can’t remember what it was from, horse trailer or boat trailer. My question is how can I tell what size

tire this is for? What do you measure, and how do you plug those measurements into the tire sizes that are given in todays codes? The rim is about 10-15 years old.

It can be done pretty quickly. There will be 3 measurements you will need in order to find out what it will fit. The first measurement is the Diameter of the rim. To get a fairly accurate measurement of the diameter take a soft measuring tape and place it around the rim just inside the outer edge. Take that number and divide by 3.14159 (a very approximate but accurate enough for Pi) That will give you your diameter.

Second measurement is the width of the rim. This one is measured across the inside edges of the rim. This wil vary a bit with rim diameter, as a larger diameter rim usually/generally has a larger width. This is important because it determines what sizes of tire would best suit the rim.

Third measurement will be the bolt-hole diameter. If the rim is a 4,6, or 8 bolt rim, there will be no issue...measure from one bolt, across the center to the other bolt for the diameter. For a 5 bolt rim, you need the diameter of the bolt circle to be accurate This is hard because finding the exact diameter is tough because the bolts are not directly across the center of the rim. It may be best to get a rough but fairly accurate measurement by "eyeing" the center of the rim and measuring to the center of one bolt, then doubling the distance. it should give you a fairly rough idea as to what it is...which may help you to determine what the rim belongs to...

Good luck

Steve
