Bucktails for big northern

Toby

Recommended Posts

I have been using bucktails for northerns for a while. I use the #5 mepps. It seems that when i cast along the shorelines, i only catch the smaller ones. I was wondering if there was a better way to catch the bigger northern. I just recently purchased a bigger, muskie bucktail. Should I continue to attack the shorelines or go for main lake points? Any help would be nice.

Once the water is about 60 degrees or so the big girls head to cooler (deeper) water. Any area where access to some shallower water and food is a good spot. Also, they might be following bait fish pods around on some lakes. So, you might want to go to a crankbait lure instead of the bucktail for the deeper water. Spinnerbaits might actually work better than your bucktail in the spring...They are tough to beat in and around any weed growth.

Spinnerbaits are the way to go for big pike. In my expereince with big pike you can't beat black with silver blades, let them sink along a deep weed edge and work them back and hang on.
