MinKota 12V or 24 ???

A friend is going to buy a MinKota troling motor and I told him I would help wire his boat for a bow mounted motor and 2 batteries in the stern. Can anyone tell me the advantages of a 12 volt and 24 volt motors? Also what size wire do we need for a 55 lb motor? 10ga or 8ga ?

Having just installed a 24 volt it is not that tough to do...most of my frustration came from the autopilot directions, trying to get it level, but I digress, go with 8 guage wire or 6 if you can find it, it is pretty straight forward, either way....just remember to get a fuse for it, go with the automatic reseting kind from FF, cost like 10 bucks......
