SMALL Alum. Repair - - Welding vs Epoxy Blend Options

moby1

Question

I have a Lund S14 console I am working on for a project. It had sat in a shed since 97 and I just tackled the first obstacle, getting the motor running. With that out of the way I can get to the interior. At the very front bottom of the boat (about 4" out from the center line) is a small hole. It is about the same size as a rivet but is not from a rivet. It appears that someone dropped something sharp and heavy in the boat while it was in the storage shed. My question(s) are-
1) has anyone used any alumaloy type product?
2) what kind of $$ would welding cost?
3) has anyone had any experiences (+ or-) with JB Weld type 2 component reinforced epoxy type products.
I purchased one of the above type (different brand I cant think of now) 2 components but can't decide if I should use it or not. The interior (and MABEY the exterior) of the boat will be sprayed with polyurea (containment tank liner like tuck bedliner) so leaking should not be an issue but I want to repair it as if it was going to stand alone without the coating.

If you lived closer to me, I'd weld it for next to nothing being a fellow FM'er. TIG welding would be the way to go (my opinion-not having ever used an epoxy). If you decided to get it welded, to save a few bucks...clean it up yourself. Use sandpaper and a stainless steel wire brush to clean up the area around the hole. That way when a guy welds it he won't have to do that part, and should only take a couple of minutes to weld it shut for you. I've welded holes, gashes and seams on boats and pontoons...the cleaner the better! The weld will take better, as well as being stronger!

Not sure about down in the cities, but up here the rates probably average around $35.00-$50.00/hr or more. Personally, something quick like that I've done for next to nothing. ie (a retired couple brought in their pontoon to have a part welded back on, took 5 min. to clean, 5 to weld-job done-didn't charge a dime) But that is just me.

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
