Trolling Motor

aug495fish

Question

I am looking for some advise and opinions on what trolling motor I should get. I have a 16' Sylvan aluminum boat with four bench seats. I know...nothing fancy but it works for my family and me. I will be putting a 20hp motor on next spring. When I talked to a guy at the marine shop I go to, he told me I should get at least a 65 lb thrust. To be honest, I don't know much about trolling motors. The only ones I have ever used were on boats that I had borrowed from friends. I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

He's nuts. 50 Lb. thrust and either a 48 or 54" shaft would be more than adequate. This time of year you can probably get a better deal on a trolling motor as places are starting to push hunting equip. Expect to pay 300-350.00 for above set-up new. Or, check the used gear forum and you might find a deal....

I agree. 50 lbs would be MORE than adequate for your boat. I have a similar boat (14 foot alumacraft, bench seats, and 15 HP Honda), and my basic $85 Minnkota Endura does just fine. I believe it is rated at 30 lbs of thrust.

I have a 16' Smokercraft Stinger, same lenght as your boat but wider. I put a 55 lb Minnkota power drie on the bow and am more than pleased with the power. A rule of thumb I use is get the maximum power that's within your budget you might not need all the power all the time but if you get caught in a heavy current or other difficult situation it's nice to know you will have the power to get through.
