CB Radio Question

I just got an older CB radio from a friend and put it in my truck. It's a 40 channel radio thats all I really know about it. Also it has the smaller antenna that I put on my roof. My question is this: How do whips work? By getting those can I pick up more signal and talk/ reach farther?

If you get a decent antenna and install it right it will work great. Google "Walcott C.B." in Iowa. They can answer your question. You can also get a good one at any big truck stop. How is the C.B. working now?

I've got a magnet type antenna on the top of my truck. The C.B. works pretty good. It doesn't pick up that clear of a signal but it seems to get some channels in.
