New Yamaha Tiller Handle

markzeke

Question

I got a new 90 hp Yamaha motor and I decided to get the new tiller handle installed on it. The 2nd time I took the boat out, (opening weekend) the motor was stuck in forward. You should have seen my surprise when we backed the boat up to unload it and after unhooking the safety chain I started the motor, put it in reverse, and drove right back on to the trailer. I called the dealer and they said that linkage must have come loose under the motor hood. After looking, all linkage was hooked up. I didn't think a motor could start in gear? Needless to say, it made fishing horrible and trying to pull in to the boat ramp was really embarassing. Has anyone else had any issues with this new tiller handle?

All Yamaha motors come to the dealers as remote motors. If a customer wants a tiller boat, the dealer must install a tiller handle assembly. This would be a dealer issue, as they are the ones that hook up and adjust the shift and throttle cables and plug in the electrical harness. Hopefully all it needs is shift linkage adjustments.
