trolling motor suggestions

MBurke

Question

Hello. I am getting ready to buy a new boat and was wondering about a new trollig motor for it. I plan on getting a Alumacraft Magnum 165. I know that I want a Minnkota bow mount with foot cable control, but what model and amount of thrust would you recomend ?? Oh yea....Im guessing I will have to go with a 24 volt system ?

Thanks

Mike

I debated for quite a while on which way to go. I initially ordered a 55# Power Drive with my 16' Mr. Pike. After reading all the posts about trolling motor sizes here on Hot Spot, I changed the order and went with a 70# Power Drive, even after the dealer said I didn't need it. I have no regrets about spending the extra cash. Considering how windy this spring has been, I would never have been happy with the 55#.

I just installed a 74# autopilot with the universal sonar and the copilot. Cant say enough about the copilot I love it its well worth the extra $150 I have a 1750 lund tyee. like the above post you cant have enough power. The only set back is the cost of a extra battery and a place to put it. I also would reccommend a on board charger if your boat doesnt come with one with a 12 volt system pulling a battery is not a problem but with a 24volt its a pain in the butt.

Well I have decided on what size to go with, now I am wondering if I want to got with foot controled or go with one of those new remote controled ones with the little controler that you can put on your wrist, belt or fishing pole. I sortof have my mind set on the old stand by foot control push/pull cable one. Has anyone got any insite on which one to go with ?? Thanks...Mike smile.gif

I have the same boat ('99 year) and it came with a Minn-Kota PD50 12V. If I were to change it, I'd go with a 24V and a touch more thrust. It has a 48" shaft too, BTW.

Not sure if they changed the layouts since then, but two batteries in the front battery compartment would be tight on my boat to go to 24V. I have the side console layout.

Whether or not to go with the remote or foot pedal is debatable. I'd still have the foot control no matter what, and then use the remote depending on what sort of fishing I was doing at the time.
