A Good #'s Lake anyone??

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, this might be my last time out with my dad because he is getting up there in years. Other then a few flukes on LOTW, I haven't been able to put him on a Musky on some of the bigger lakes like Vermilion, and Mille Lacs. Can anyone recommend some smaller lakes that will hold good #'s as opposed to the lakes I mentioned? Any portion of the state in the Northern Half away from the Metro is what I am looking for, my Email is [email protected]

Thanks!

Well, there are a ton of lakes out there... IF I needed to catch a muskie and didn't care that it was big.. I might hit Little Wolf lake out of Bemidji. Not sure but I think you need to pay at a resort to get on it. You probably will not catch a fish over 40"... Otherwise.... Just look at all your lakes up that way that have skis in it...

To be honest..Why leave the metro.. Calhoon and Hariet have great chances at hybrids?

Up in Northern MN near Isabella (past Duluth) there is a lake by the name of Dumbbell, it is by no means a size lake but definetly a #'s lake for sure. Years ago it was stocked with the Shoepac strain and has since been stocked with Leech Lake Strain. Anything larger then 40" will most likely be Leech fish. I have some friends that fished it a couple years ago and had over 10 fish in the boat for the weekend and only one near 40". I fished it mean years ago, my dads cousin has a cabin up there. It's a great walleye fishery also. Good luck getting your father on some fish, I sure wish my old man were interested in Musky fishing, walleyes only for him.

Shaminau south and west of Brainerd has some good numbers and is fairly easy to read. Know a guy who set up a video camera in his spear house and got 29 ski's coming through his hole, hell one even came out of the water after his decoy. I am sure that if you get to any of these smaller lakes when the conditions are right you will see some fish. My favorite place to see fish (see being the main point here) is Mille Lacs after 3 or so days of hot humid weather and being on the water as the front moves in. I am sure everyone already knows that but man do I see fish when those conditions happen. Just need to work on boating them sons a' guns. Good luck with the old man, hope you find em'.
