Baitcasters

Ducks and Fish

Question

I posted this in the bass forum, but thought maybe it should go here.

I am new to baitcasters, I have always used spinning reels. Any recommendations to length and action of the rod and recommendations to reels. I fish spinner baits and plastic for bass and also throw spinners for northerns. Any help would be appreciated.

I can't help you much on the bass stuff but for pike and spinner baits I use a 7' MH rod with a good fast tip that loads up deeper down the rod. This will help to get the bait moving when you cast or sling shot it for a little more range. If you get a rod in the Meduim range it gets to flimsy and the rod tip will whip back and forth when throwing heavier baits raising all sorts of ruckus with your reel spool speeds. This will make for some of those backlashes that look like birds nests. Plus that faster tip will help with feeling the blades and weeds go by on the spinner bait. Trouble is if you are going to throw bass rigs with it it may be to heavy and act like a pool cue on the lighter bass tackle. Maybe look into what the bass guys use for flipping?(Bass guys and the flipping ,pitching, chucking, tossing, skipping stuff confused.gif) Help us out bass guys, whats a good heavy flipping rod?
