VAsmallie
somebody on a smallie board mentioned that you would be a good guy to ask about fishing in Gunflint, so I thought I would bother you with a post.my father-in-law and I are going to the Gunflint Lodge on June 3-7 with 3 days of guided fishing. I have never been anywhere near way up there and have no idea what to expect. I fish almost exclusively for smallies in the James and New Rivers in VA and that's what I would like to go after up there, but would like to try Walleyes and Pike too. We have one day when we will be on our own so was just curious as to what we should bring fishing-wise and what will the bite be like that first week of June in typical conditions. gunflint
If I had one day to fish for smallies I would go to one of the smaller lakes. Gunflint lake has everything you're looking for but can be intimidating. It's very deep and kind of bowl shaped with little structure. I would check out a day rental at Hungry Jack Lodge. Those guys can set you up with some good smallie and walleye info. Smallie fishing up here is generaly very good but if you come during the mayfly hatch all bets are off. As far as what to bring I'd just bring a standard spinning set up for smallies and the locals will let you know what to rig it with. Also "bring warm cloths" it can get chilly up here in the evenings, even in august. Good luck.
