Fish House roof ideas?

Kylersk

Question

Ok, I'd like to hear some ideas on building the roof for my fish house. My walls are currently 2x2 studs, with 2x2 plates on top and bottom of studs. Currently, I'm leaning towards addind a rubber roof to the top, but the design of the roof is causing me a bit of trouble. My initial design was to put a 2x3 on top of my walls, then take a 2x4 and cut it down from center, to the 2x3 size. Giving me a one inch slope over 37.5 inches. Middle of joist (37.5") would be full 3.5", and sloping down to 2.5" on each side. Not sure if this is enough slope or not. Also, if I did go this route, would I need to use joist hangers? Or can I screw the joisted directly into the side of my 2x3?

Anyways, thoughts, suggestions and any comments are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Here's a photo of the roof of my shack.

I used 2x6's cut down in the manner you are describing. I have the full 6" depth in the center and it tapers to 2 or 2 1/2" at the ends.

I did use a metal connector on each end to connect the joists to the walls. Its actually a hurricane clip but it worked very well to connect the joist to the top plate of my wall. I put all the connectors up first. Then I just popped the rafters in 1 by 1 and came back and nailed them in. Pretty simple. I have a 1x piece of fascia that covers all the connectors up. Notice the rafters stack on top of the studs at 16" o.c. 16" o.c. works well for putting up 4' wide sheets of paneling inside.

If you do go the way you are describing, I would definitely recommend a top flange joist hanger that nails to the top plate and then hangs the rafter down inside your house. I'm not really big on nailing or screwing through your studs into the end grain of your rafter. Remember, you will probably be climbing around on top of this thing at some time. The one problem I could see is finding a joist hanger that can take a 2 1/2" deep joist. Most are going to be 5 1/2" deep or more.

Hanson, thanks for the response. Do you have other pictures of your house? I'm curious to see how your siding and roof meet. You mentioned you have a 1x for a fascia, is that exposed? If you do not feel like posting the pictures, my email is kylersk at yahoo (Contact US Regarding This Word).

Thanks again.
