trailer light adapter

Thundercluck

Question

I have a 91 pickup with a 4-flat trailer light connector. My dad's new trailer has a 5-way flat trailer light connector because of the brakes on the trailer. I have searched all over for a 4 way to 5 way adapter, but cannot find anything. Does anyone know of somewhere that would have this, or am I going to have to install a 7-round and then get the adapters for the 4 and 5 from there? Thanks

I'm betting that the 5th wire is for a reverse lock out solenoid for backing up. Something you may want to check is the brake actuator on the trailer. If there is a reverse lock out pin, I believe you would not need to find an adapter. Just run a 4 wire flat harness, plug it in to the 5 wire end. It should fit, and one male end from the 5 way is open. I am assuming this is a surge brake system too... If it is electric brakes, then you would need to find a 5 way or 7 way main harness for your truck. Northern tool may be a good spot to stop and check for the items you need...

Good luck on this..

I bought a 5 wire harness at Fleet Farm & ran the Blue wire to the back up light on the tail light. The trailer will work with a 4 wire, you will just have to install the back up pin when you need to back up. It is a real pain, I have a Shorelander and it will not stay in when you go from forward to reverse. Hope this helps.
