TSCTSC
Dear All, My garage is way too small for my boat and I am thinking of some way to store it under cover. I realized that on one side of the house, there is some land which I could possibly park the boat. Would just reverse the trailer up the curb to get the boat in. I am thinking of a few options : 1. Re route my fencing such that it comes along one side of it, and install a gate at the front 2. Rent or buy some kind of shed that I could place next to my house My main aim is to ensure storage at my home. Secondly, to provide some cover. Finally also for security. I guess chain link fence is an option, but if I could keep it covered, it would be great. I have included a picture with the black line drawn to indicate the potential spot. The maximum area I have without taking my neighbour's land is 9'3" wide from the side of the house. And the length of the shed is about 23'. The minimum space within the shed is 8'9" wide (doorway too), 22'6", and if there is a roof, at least 9' so that I will not keep bumping my head when I am standing on the boat. Does anyone have any advice or ideas or knows who I should be talking to about the above options? Thanks!! PS/ Finally, how about laying some hard floor or concrete on that spot? Is that gonna be expensive too? Total concrete area is 46' x 9'3''. This is to facilitate me in using a hand pushed trailer dolly to move the trailer out or into the shed if someone else parked on the kerb right in front of the shed. Nutty Fisherman
The first thing I would do is check with the city you live in to make sure you can do what you are thinking.
fisherking01
TSCTSC, That's right, you need to check local ordinances on placing structures for storage. If it is summer storage, there are many canopys available also with sides for them. These have no snowload capacity and are for summer only. If you are looking for something more permanent, the possiblilities are endless, and expense depends on what is allowed by the city. I guess I'd start with a call to find out what you can do, and go from there. ps did you hook any more sturgeon on Sunday?
JohnMickish
Yep, most cities require at least a 5 foot setback from the neighbors property line. Also, if thinking of storing it there without a shed you should check that out too. There are also some cities that prohibit "storage" of things in the side or front of a house. TSCTSC
OK...so if I build a wooden fence with a gate, that should be OK right? Since I am not building a shed ... it does not have to be 5' back. I could then put a gate at the end of it and use it as a secondary access point for my backyard, but use it as a storage for the boat instead. Could then come up with some tarp or something to provide cover? Or even a large piece of plank?

PerchJerker
How about putting a gate in the fence that's in the photo, and putting your boat in the fenced in back yard???? Seems like that might be the quickest /easiest / cheapest fix, especially if your neighbor will let you back in and out of his driveway??? Then you could use a storage tarp for you boat, just make sure you have it supported in such a way that rain will drain off it, not pool into it. Good luck. TSCTSC
I was actually thinking of extending the fence on the side out to the front of my house and then putting a gate there like you said. What say you?
JohnMickish
Here is an idea. If you have an attached garage why not put a garage door on the back side of it so you just open both doors and back it into the back yard. Out of site and then you can add a slab or class 5 bed at your leisure? Whats the new boat going to be? A bigger Mr. Pike? Thats my plan until the funds come along to extend the garage out the back. A door has to be cheaper than a fence and slab.
LundExplorer
I would definitely put something on the ground on which the tires sit. The grass and dirt will contribute to tire rot if you leave it there long enough (spoken from experience). Concrete would be nice but expensive, but a few patio blocks in the ground under the tires would work too. Mowing the grass under the boat might be a pain with that though (again from experience). LundExplorer
As far as a shelter goes, I bought a Roundtop (brand name) shelter from Menards & it worked really well over the winter. It's 12' wide though, and kind of unsightly. I use mine as temporary storage over the winter & take it down in the Spring.
