water level in deep cycle battery?

CALVINIST

Question

Hello,

I bought a deep cycle last year, it has the caps on there so you can fill the "liquid material" when it gets low. I cannot see any "liquid material" in there. All I can see are the lead fins. What exactly am I supposed to put in there? Distilled water? Also, will the life and performance be permanantly comprimised if this has gone on too long?

Thanks.

It's not a good sign when you see the fins. At this point you could have calcification in the bottom of the battery which will eventually cause the battery to lose power. I'd recommend that you fill the reservoirs to the bottom of the holes and put the battery on a trickle charger until it is fully charged. You may want to have the battery tested to see if any of the cells are dead.

Thanks for your help...I just bought a boat, last year for the first time, and I am learning all the little things that need to be done to maintain equipment and so forth. I just hope that battery will be o.k.
