Just curious about striped bass

Recommended Posts

What do most people consider a trophy striped bass? I recently went fishing here in Iowa, as I am from MN and caught some of these. They are so much fun to catch. I just wanted to know a little more about them. Do many of them get over 5 pounds? I only caught 3 and 2 of them were like 3/4 of a pound and the other was 6 pounds 14 ounces. Should I have thought about mounting that? I know absolutly nothing about these creatures.

Very few white bass or "striped bass", sometimes called silver bass or sand bass, get over 17" or so. The state record white bass weighed 3 lb. 14 oz., and measured 20".

BTW, there are no real striped bass in Iowa. The striped bass, a much larger relative of the white bass, is native to the East Coast, and spawns in fresh water while spending much of its life in the ocean. The striped bass has been stocked succesfully in rivers and reservoirs in the southern US, but attempts to stock striped bass in Iowa were unsuccesful, and there are no striped bass in Iowa today.

The IDNR does stock a hybrid of white bass and striped bass, known as the wiper, in several reservoirs and a stretch of the Mississippi. The wiper grows larger than the white bass, but does not reach the size of the striped bass.
