Late April and May Steelies

How does the northshore fishing look late season this year? I'm going fishing on this Tuesday, does anyone have any suggestions? Last year I fished the second weekend in May and had an amazing day on the northshore, is this year too warm and dry to repeat? Are you Duluth boys focusing on smelt now instead of Steelhead?

Good luck this weekend, we'll see you on Tuesday!

Thanks,

Jay

Fishing has been quite poor for me the last couple times out. I'm going to give it another shot today, but the water temps are rising fast and the suckers are starting to move in. I would say there is a chance we get some more fresh fish with some rain, but I think there is a good chance I'm going to put the 7 wt away early this year. If you come up again and want to give it a shot let me know.

Also check out the duluth/bwca forum, there is almost always updated info about fishing steelies and the progress of the run. The WI forum also has some info on the brule as well.

QS,

I'm coming up monday evening and possibly staying in my car or at a friends in Duluth, then I'm thinking about heading to the uppershore until I run into some fish. Do you think the Northern rivers are suffering from the same warm water? I know there aren't that many Loopers up north, but there has to be some good steelhead action farther north? What are your plans for Tuesday?

Tight lines!

Jay

Things are going much better further north around Grand Marais. A buddy of mine was up there today and water levels and clarity are good in the bigger rivers since some of those rivers come out of bigger bodies of water then the rivers on the lower and middle shore here. I don't think I can make a trip that far this week but maybe on the weekend. But I am probally going to be spending more time on the big pond then the rivers from here on out.

Thanks for the reply, I'll be going solo then. Let me know if you change your mind, I'll pay for gas! Steelhead fishing is worth it! I'll be coming up next weekend on Sat-Mon morning for more Steelheading. Do you know the name of the river that goes straight through GM?

Thanks,

Jay

The Devil's Track is just north of Grand Marais and holds a good flow throughout the year. The Arrowhead Brule is about a half hour north of Grand Marias and is also a very good river. If we get some rain it would also be worth checking out some of the smaller streams such as The Kodonce, Kimbal Creek, and the Flute Reed. I might head up the shore next weekend, it sound like it's just starting to get good up there.

What's a dazzling urbanite like yourself going to be doing in a rustic setting like that grin.gif In case you're wondering, that's a line from blazing saddles- we're not just busting your balls. I was up on the devils track yesterday, and all indications were that the run is not over up there yet. We only hooked into five fish and they were all very close to the mouth, even though we fished some fantastic looking water further upstream. Shoot me an email if you're heading up that way, its an amazing river and I wouldn't mind fishing it again this spring.
