Eagle Trailer hubs/bearings

prov1900

Question

I have an Eagle tandem trailer and the hubs have a clear window so you can see the oil level. Oil, because it is watery, like motoroil, not thick grease like on my former boat's trailer. My question is what is the point of this and more specifically, how do you access the hubs/bearings to add grease, and third (sorry), do I add regular hub grease, or is there some other other product. I am embarrassed to ask you guys because when I asked my dealer, they didnt really seem to know. Desperate for answers, anyone with one of these trailers or knows what the deal is, your help would be appreciated.

Thanks Surface. Got it. Got the job done today, other than having to jack up the trailer and remove all four wheels to do it, wasnt too bad. Next question if you dont mind. During the process, we noticed that the non-brake wheel, i.e. the front one, has a slight but noticeable, ok, pretty significant wobble. Lugs were checked, they were tight. What is the deal with this, I am really starting to sweat this trailer. Is this a bearing issue or something else. This trailer is < than one year old and has roughly less than 5000 (?) miles on it if I had to guess. Also, if it helps, there was no noticeable wear on the tire. If truth be known, the tires are like brand new, but then being less than a year old, they should be. Thanks.

When you say wobble do you mean when you spin it the tire theres wobble? That would indicate your tire has a bulge or maybe a bent rim.

Or do you mean when it was jacked up there was some side to side play? That would be your castel nut thats a bit loose.

That nut holds the hub on the spindel. I finger tighten the castel nut then snug it 1/4 turn with a wrench. Then I back it out and finger tight again.

I wouldn't let the oil bath hubs bother you. Just check to see that the oil is clear(not milky) and the level is up and you shouldn't have any surprizes on the road.
