What locator to buy?

lancer

Question

I am looking to purchase a new locator for my boat, I am not concerned with speed as a function, just water temp. I have been looking at the lowrance x-125/135 and they seem like good units. The price is just a little more than I want to spend for the 135. My main question is what sort of power in terms of peak watts would be the minumum for a good locator. Will 1500 watts peak power pick up fish in cover or should I spend the money on a unit with 2400-4000watts peak power.

Any input would be appreciated smirk.gifsmirk.gif

First establish what your budget is, then make your choice. Select the unit with the highest power for the price. I highly recommend going with a Lowrance or Eagle. They make some very nice units that are user friendly.

I can't seem to make up my mind, In talking with some friends they seem to think 1500 watts of power is plenty for picking up fish on structure or burried in cover. Anyone know what the real benefits of higher peak wattage are???

Lancer,

The big bonus to having more power is marking fish effectively when you are moving. The more power the unit has the faster you can move and still mark fish. Thats why the high power units can be a real tool for finding fish even at higher speeds. I have a X125 and love it. If I were a guy that wanted to cover more water faster to find fish then I would choose the X135.
