DEVILS INFO PLEASE

Recommended Posts

i was on D.L. thrusday thru sunday the 26th.

fishing was bad, the guide i talked to said the same thing and i did not hear anything from other fishers. some perch were coming out of Cactus. and a large group of people in the middel of 6 mile.

sorry for the bad news.

the ice is thick, 24-30". snow on the ice was 0" to 6" with the standard drifting etc.

trucks were driving all over, wheelers and sleds. we had sleds and after the first day put them back on the trailer and drove out in the truck. no problems.

good luck - 'better luck than i had'

Had a fisher friend that spent all last week out there. They could only pull 4 perch a day. Caught average 12 eyes a day. Some were good size. The previous post is about right - 6 mile was about the best, away from the group in the middle. The key was the type of bait.

I was there the weekend of March 18th and its about the same as everyone else, though even the walleyes were slow for us. Saturday we ended up fishing pike and then Sunday we fished 6 mile and ended up with about 18 perch between my dad, me and the guide in about 9 hours fishing. Things were slow. Often times we would go extended amounts of time without even marking a fish and even those we marked often times seemed uninterested.

Yeah, I'll tell you what Down to Earth, don't let them locals tell you anything different - the ol Big Water is an over rated ice fishing lake. You can get similar results staying a lot closer in the MN lakes for ice fishing. Yeah, there are the handful of guys that nail em in the winter, but I still personally feel that it is over rated in the winter. I went one time this past February against my better judgement and we got skunked except for 1 perch. Don't get me wrong, this lake is dynamite in the open water months, but dump on it in ice fishing season... That's just my 2 cents...

I hope your not giving up after one bad experience on Devils Lake. If I gave up that easy I would have quit fishing a long time ago. The good days out weigh the bad days on Devils Lake by far. We have one of the best multi species lakes in the midwest. Devils Lake in the winter can be hard to figure out but once you get an idea of where to look the rewards are great. Where else can you fish all day and hardly see another person on the ice. The trees are the key to fishing Devils Lake. 90% of the time we are fishing in the trees for perch and walleyes. We vwery seldom fish the deep water for perch anymore because the fish in the trees are more aggressive. Fish perch in the winter just like you fish walleyes in the summer.
