Mercury 80 outboard

French Spaniel

Question

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they think is wrong with my motor. It started up ok and would run fine. When we would open it up it would go full and then just die.

I could hear when it was about to cut out so I had my son squeeze the black pump on the hose. Then it would run again. Someone told me I just needed to change the hose because it is loosing its prime. Is that true and is it something I can do myself? Thanks , FS

Fuel starvation.
You could have a small air leak in your tank hose or fuel lines between the pump and fitting for the tank hose.
From your description it doesn't sound like a dirty filter but it wouldn't hurt to change it.

If the primer bulb is collapsed then your tank isn't vented.
If all your hoses and lines check out then replace the diaphragms in the fuel pump.

I'm one of these guys that relies on my mechanic to do things because I'm just not a "motor head." Don't know much about things except that it gets me where I want to fish.

The hose is not collasped and I have an interior gas tank. I don't connect the hose like on a smaller outboard tank. So thanks for the help and the only way to get it done is to take it in and find out the damage. This way I at least have some knowledge to have some idea what to tell the mechanic.

Thanks, FS
