hairy in high key

I don't often try for high-key (fancy photo speak for lightly-colored) backgrounds, but when all you've got is a birch forest and a dark bird, well . . .

Canon 1D MarkII, Canon 400L f2.8, Canon 1.4 teleconverter, iso200, 1/640, f4 (and one DARN strong tripod and ball head!)

Tom, you read it right. But it's Canon Professional Services smiling on me. And, well, CPS is the poor pro shooter's version of the camera gods. grin.gif

I have the lens and the 1D MarkII through Sunday, shipping it back Monday. I got them for the wolf/eagle shoot last weekend, and the free CPS loan program allows me to keep them 10 to 14 days per loan. Only cost to me is return shipping.

I wanted the 600L f4, but the Olympics were still going on when I made the request, so they were out of 600s. But the 400L f2.8 with 1.4 TC works out to 560mm at f4, basically the same thing. And I'll tell you, the first spare $7,000 that comes my way I'm picking up the 600 f4 or 400 f2.8. Yeah, right! I've also grown addicted to the water- and dust-sealed quality build of the 1 series bodies. And the 8.5 fps really allowed me to capture the moment with those eagles dive bombing in. Gonna be hard to say goodbye to that combo on Monday.

Meanwhile, I'll be doing a LOT of shooting today, tomorrow and Sunday, filling card after card. Even subjects I've shot repeatedly will be re-shot if opportunity knocks, because the primes are so much sharper than the zooms, regardless of brand, and because I'm building a stock nature portfolio of all the species I can get for sale to publications.

Ahhh, shooting, shooting, shooting! grin.gif

And I see, Tom, that your new gear is treating you well as well. grin.gif

Yes sir, But I am not getting much of an opportunity to use it. I had plans to go out today, but alas, my son is still sick, so daddy got to stay home again. I will definitely be out tomorrow. Who knows, it may even cloud up on me when I finally do get out. crazy.gif

Well, when you can't leave home, you do the next best thing... You shoot the birds on the deck through the patio sliding door.

Steve I was inspired by your high key idea, so I tried one early this morning while I had the right light for it...

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
