Rice Lake in Brainerd!!!

Does anyone have any experience on this body of water in Brainerd??? I know this lake is not the typical lake set up since the Mississippi runs through it and I was wondering about the smallmouth and largemouth fishing here. I have heard a few things, but it is all hear-say. I would like to hear from our "experts" that visit the Bass page frequently.

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I LOVE that body of water! I primarily have fished it in the fall for smallies and the action can be unbelievable. I have also seen several shows by the Lindner's that were filmed there as well as seen them there too.

BIG smallies - some in the 20+" range frequent these waters as well as good sized northerns and walleye.

And, when you get bored, you can run the river and bang some great largemouth. A couple years ago they had the Alternates Tournament of the State Tournament of Champions there and the catches were VERY impressive. I think the winner had 25+ pounds.

What type of techiniques do you predominantly use on this body of water?? What type of structure are you fishing...shallow or deep??? What is the clarity of the water there??

Thanks--

I've used many things - jig/plastic, jigworms, carolina rigs, and twistertail grubs - all catch fish there. Have not had much success with cranks in Rice Lake but out on the river have caught some fish with them.

If live bait is your thing then very large (4-6") minnows or shiners is also good.

Most of my fishing is relatively deep and slow. But you can find fish on the outside weedlines in shallower water too.

Never fished it in the spring but can think of some nice spawning spots that might be excellent as well depending upon the timing of the spawn and the season opener.

Hope this helps........good luck!
