This can be a great time of year for open water 'eyes. Plastics rule the roost in this area for river fishing. Dragging or pitching jigs and plastic to sand flats or rip-rap generally puts fish in the boat.

The WI river is open year round, so I'll be getting the boat out of storage soon. (Some have been out already...) We usually fish minnows or plastics on jigs anywhere there's a current break. Sometimes you have to use quite a bit of weight to get down in the current, but you have to adjust for the day.

I found some walleyes about three weeks ago on the Ol Miss, They were in fairy shallow water with good current. I was surprised[pleasently]. Jig and minnow, it was kind of a trade off, cast a heavier jig farther but get more snags. The eyes were running larger than I usually catch. They took some finesse and bite very lighly.
