I live on the Crow River Up in rogers and i just wanna know how many people fish it. Ive caughten about 12 species just last year. The Catfishing last year was absolutley amazing. Along with the smallies and walleyes. Anyone got some Crow river Stories?

I haven't fish the north fork that often, but I do fish the Rockford to New Germany area alot. I love making float trips on it. During the high water in the spring you can even get away with a small Jon boat. Tons of shore spots with easy access.

Do you shore fish or boat/canoe? How is the water level up that way?

I mainly Fish off shore but my dad has a john boat that we can skip through some pretty shallow water with. I got some catfish holes where the 8-10pounders never stop. I try for the smallies catch a few, but the mississippi is where its at for those. You fish the miss much for smallies?

I dont really know much about the water levels than it fluctates alot. Its completely flooded the golf course across the river from us alomst every spring .

I used to fish for smallies quite alot. I mainly fished around the Elk River area either wading or float trips. Heck sounds like fun maybe we should hook up and try it some times. There some good channels in the Miss too.

I used to love fishing the Crow River. In fact, it was on the banks of the Crow River where I first learned how to fish channel cats back in the early 90's. We fished all over on the river but the spot I remember fishing at the most was at Bernings Mill in St. Michael, where the old dam used to be. We used to catch lots of cats (and snags!) down there in the rubble of the old dam. Never seen the dam before they blew it, but I heard it was always a good multi-species fishing spot.

I hardly ever go out to the Crow anymore, but I might start making a few visits here and there again. After all, that's where my love of catfishing began smile.gif

What are the 12 species you've caught in the crow? I've grown up fishing the crow and still fish it once in a while for walleyes.

This is what I've caught.

1 walleye

2 pike

3 crappie

4 channels

5 carp

6 smallies

7 suckers

8 red suckers redhorse?

9,10,11 bull heads yellow, brown, black

12 buffalo

13 not a fish but caught a few snapping turtles

Probably missing some also. Guess i've caught more than i thought. Never no what your going to hook into. grin.gif

It's usually my 1st stop every season for cats. Biggest I've caught on crow is #16. Manny sounds like we'll have to make a trip soon.

I would also like to add Softshell turtle and sunnies to that list. I've also heard of some LM in the crow but have never seen one caught personally.

Deal,

If mother nature would just decide to give us some sample weather and we're in business. I've got some shore spots and a canoe. This waiting period really SUCKS. I might have to go chase some wallys on Pool2 or 4 to past the time.

I have fished the south fork alittle bit with limited success for cats. I haven't managed any "game" species yet. Just wondering whats the earliest time you guys start to get fish out there and what some of the your tactics are.

Can anyone tell me a good canoe route? How long does it take to get from rockford to dayton or say hanover to dayton? Can you even get through with a conoe easily? Any good rapids?

I have been planning on making a couple canoe trips out there this year.

Well its pretty hard to judge because of the fluctating water levels but my buddies and i float on tubes from the hilltop in hanover to the park at bernings mill and that takes about for hours. That was also in lower water levels.

If you wanted to float from hanover to Dayton be prepared for an easy an easy all day trip. If your casting for smallies i wouldnt even bother. My friends brother went from hanover to millside and not even a bite. But the next day he went across from fox hollow and vertical jigged spinner baits in the exposed roots in the undercut banks and got over thirty so its pretty hit and miss unless you get a good hole.

My species are: 1. Smallmouth 2.Pike 3. walleye 4.sunfish 5.Redhorse 6.Sucker 7. Carp 8. bullhead,(all types9.10.)11. channels. 12.? Not to sure but almost positive a flathead, heard theres not to many above the coon rapids (Contact US Regarding This Word) but maybe a stray. Many softshells also.

The millside at Saint Micheal is one great spot. Last year there was people ice fishing it. It gets about thirty feet deep during high water and i have personally seen some big channels come out of there. About 2 miles down from that i got a spot Where a Couple said that caught a Channel 4 lbs shy of the state record. I dont know how credible there story was but i heard it straight from them. A 34 lber is big! Hey Fisherman when you caught that crappie was it just one or more?

Don't forget to invite your good buddy fishhead! wink.gif

I fished it only once. I ran the River Pro up from Dayton a few bends before the over hanging trees got in the way.

I have heard of some very good channel cat fishing all along both stretches and would love to give it a serious shot.

If the RP won't run it, I have a canoe too.

Hey Dennis How much Water Can that River Pro Go through? And is it a jet? My Dad has a Lowe 1650 with the tunnel design so the motor hangs higher then the boat. He also has a jet on it so we zip through some pretty shallow stuff. The only Real Problem when low water is The part by the Heron nesting island if you know where im talking about on the Miss. If you can get through there during low water your you got him beat.

The River Pro is an inboard jet.

http://www.riverpro-boats.com/

Nothing hanging below the hull at all.

It will go just about anywhere. I have skiped it over trees and dry land.

My problem was I couldn't get UNDER some trees. wink.gif

You have to be doing a good clip when in shallow water and the trees were hanging just a little to low to navigate safely.

In a canoe, you can go a "little" slower. wink.gif

I know the island your talking about and that riffle is not that hard to get through, my dad, who grew up on the river in Dayton) use to take our fiberglass tri hull through there, the only time I seen him hit anything was in the real low waters in the late 80's or early 90's, if your coming up river (towards Elk River) then stick to your left till your about half way through then you cut over to mid river and its a breeze, at least this is what he always did, I always just stick to the left in my jet and watch for rocks and always get through there fine.

Hey fishhead maybe if you wore your crash helmet the overhanging trees wouldnt be a problem, with the way you drive you should have one handy anyway blush.gifgrin.gif

It might be a little early for this kind of talk, but should we pick a date and organize a little informal gathering on the Crow? Seems like we already have a handful of people interested and it wouldn't have to be a big, all-out shindig, unless it grew into one. I for one, would be down for such an event.

What do you guys think??

crowriverfisher,

Ive caught few crappies from time to time early in the year. Nothing really all that big 12-13in max I've seen some dead ones in the feeder creeks where I caught them after it dried and they where huge 2-2.5lbs+. I have a friend has caught them in the winter in a deep hole. Was going to give it a shot but high water and not cold enough weather put that to rest. grin.gif Early last winter I got into some great cat fishing on the river, none all that big but many fish 3-7lbs. Was catching lots of eyes in this hole in the fall so I thought they'd still be there. The water was really low that fall and this hole was 17-20 fow. I mainly fish from Watertown to Rockford.
