2003 60HP 4 stroke Mercury

Brickhouse

Question

I am looking at a couple of different tiller boats. One has a 60HP Mercury fourstroke. I was wondering if anyone has any experience trolling with this motor. It is on a 16 foot Lund pro angler. I like to backtroll a lot pulling snells very slow, dropping it into neutral until it hits the bottom and then back into gear. Any advise on this motor would be helpful.

I have the Merc 60 4 stroke with EFI on my Lund Pro Angler. I backtroll most of the time but use my Minnkota Maxxum except if it is really windy. When I use the outboard, it just goes too fast. What we use then is a drift sock off the front of the boat.

The motor runs very quiet and starts on the first try, even the first time out for the year. I had a fuel or water pump go out when it was very new but other than that, no real problems.

Just make sure you get hooked up with a prop that is correct for that boat. I had some problems getting the boat on plane with a medium heavy load. Take it out for a ride and take some people with you to give you a load.

I have the same motor except the 2002 model. As the other posts have said, it is a good motor and starts easily, but it might troll a little fast. I had to go with a 12 pitch prop on my Lund 1675 Explorer (16'6") because I usually have three people in the boat, and it was slow to get on plane with a higher pitch. I usually get about 26-28 MPH at 5800 RPMs fully loaded. I also put a hydrofoil on mine and it made the boat plane out quicker.
