Tongue Weight ?

Sliderfishn

Question

Did search and still have questions.
Towing with '98 Chevy K1500
I did the bathroom scale test and it buried it,300+ Lbs. shocked.gif This seems WAY heavy.
Alumacraft 165 Tiller #840
Honda BF 50 Tiller #212
22 gal Gas #154
3 27 Batteries #165
Misc,Tackle,T Motors # 75
Trailer #500
Total #1946
Shorelandr says 5-7% total gross weight including trailer. That should bring the tongue weight to be between 97 and 136 Lbs.
Am I correct with my thought that my tongue weight is to heavy?

Based on what Shoreland'r recommends, it sounds heavy.

One tongue weight scale manufacturer says 10% minimum and 15% optimal, so you might be in the ballpark: .15 x 1946 = 291.9.

In general, I haven't had any trouble with heavy tongue weights with my Chevy extended cab regardless of towing the boat or camper, which tows at about 3,500 lbs.

On the opposite end, I've towed a boat (16-foot Lund console/35 hp Johnson with normal gear) with a light tongue weight that felt like I was pulling a plow.

Sliderfishn; Sounds a little heavy to me. We bought a used 1890 Lund Pro V a few years ago, we noticed the trailer wandered. After some checking we learned the tongue weight should be at least 10% of the boat and trailer weight. The tongue weight was too light. We moved the trailer axle back close to a foot to get the correct tongue weight. That took care of it, now it trails perfectly.
