25hp Outboard and water spray

bbells

Question

I have 2 25hp motors - a Mercury 4 stroke and a Mariner 2 stroke. The 4 stroke has a good flow of water coming out of the back of it. The Mariner 2 stroke just seems to spit a barely noticeable spray of water. Shouldn't there be a higher flow of water through the 2 stroke? Or, is it normal for these to only spit out a very small amount of water?

Sounds like you have a broken water pump impeller on the 2 stroke. It should kick out a steady stream of water.

That or inspect discharge hose and see if it is plugged with gunk. Pull the hose out of the discharge hole fitting and inspect...usually blow through the hose to make sure nothing plugged inside. If that fails and it still won't pump, I would say the water impeller is not working as it should. I've changed them, relatively easy.

I have detailed instructions with pictures for a large Merc/Mariner I can email. Should resemble if you are handy.

Yes, please email the pictures. It has been doing this for about 4 years. Guess I better take it apart when I get back from the opener. Is it hard to replace the impeller? Do I just take the part of the lower unit off? Its just on my 1960's era pontoon boat I call the Lampoon Pontoon (after National lampoon).

I just had work done on my motor and I inquired about the same thing. In my situatons there were three factors. First being the impeller, second being thermostats and third the type of water pump. They explained there are two types of water pumps (I don't know the exact details of the water pumps).

Basically, the water spray does not always dictate the motor temp.
