Question

What is a good marine radio for the money. What features are good to have on them. I will be fishing big water like mille lacs and leech lakes How far can one expect to be away from someone and still be able to talk to each other.,

A lot depends on where you will mount the radio. If it will be out in the elements you'll want a radio that's rated as submersable and not water resistent. Apelco and Standard make good units for this application. As far as distance a lot depends on your antenae. In general the taller the antenae the mre distance you'll get.

Good Luck!

Borch as some great insight there, water resistant does not mean water proof that's for sure.

I also agree with the tall antenas, so far I have talked from one end of Mille Lacs to the other North to South.Up in Canada a few years back I could talk to the guys who went the oposite direction on Lac Seual , we were at least 15 miles away by water and maybe 10 miles away across land.I had trouble hearing the guy with the short antane but he could here me fine.

I run a Unidin radio with an 8 foot whip antena.Just remember to fold down the antane when anchored at a dock. There will be some clown who just can't take time to move his boat by getting in and motoring around. They just try to pull thier boat around the tied up ones , then catch everyones antane with the rope.Next thing you know three boats no longer have antenas that are not broken.

Speaking from experiance here!!!Thank's to the nice dock boy, I found the people responcible and was compensated for the antane.

Huming bird makes a real nice radio for around $200.It has plenty of options and power.

If I had to buy a new one I would look at the New model Ray 48. Check for ALL channel scan as that is a feature I like. Waterproof also as the others said.
I think this model has both of these features for about $150.
